How to Choose your Wedding Photographer
by Katie from Katie Turnbull Images
Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions you'll make when planning your day – these are the photos you’ll hold onto for the rest of your life. As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the honour of capturing many love stories, and I wanted to share some guidance to help you find the photographer who feels just right for you.
1. Find a Style That Speaks to You
Every photographer has a different style – some are light and airy, others are moody and dramatic, some (like me!) focus on a natural, relaxed, documentary style that captures real moments as they happen. Look through portfolios and ask yourself how the photos feel. Could you see yourself in them?
2. Connection Is Everything
You’ll spend a big part of your wedding day with your photographer – so it’s important you feel comfortable and at ease. When you chat with them, do you feel like they really get you? A good photographer should feel more like a calm, friendly presence than a stranger pointing a camera at you. That's why I offer an Engagement session as a gift. So we can get to know each other and have a small practise before the wedding day.
3. Check the Full Gallery – Not Just the Highlights
It’s easy to fall in love with a few stunning shots on Instagram, but ask to see full wedding galleries. This gives you a real feel for how a photographer tells the entire story of a day – the details, the emotion, the energy from morning to night. All my couples receive a highlights slideshow, ask me and I'll show you some.
4. Ask About the Experience
At Katie Turnbull Images, I offer more than just pretty pictures. I help you with timelines, tips for a stress-free day, and offer a complimentary engagement session to get to know you both before the big day. Your experience matters – from booking to delivery.
5. Make Sure They’re Reliable and Professional
Look for clear communication, contracts, and someone who is prompt and prepared. Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life – you want someone you can trust to show up, know what they’re doing, and blend into your day like they’ve always been part of it.
6. Think Beyond the Wedding Day
A wedding photographer doesn't just take photos – they preserve memories. After the day is over, your images will be the one thing that brings it all flooding back. Choose someone whose work you’ll want to print, frame, and revisit for decades to come.
From Me to You....
At the heart of what I do is the desire to tell your story honestly and beautifully. I care deeply about the moments that matter – the hugs, the tears, the laughter and quiet glances. If that sounds like what you’re looking for, I’d absolutely love to chat.
Warmly,Katie x
